INTRODUCTION TO DANCE (AGE 2)
with Joanna Patterson
A movement class for grown ups and little ones to enjoy together, introducing large and small movement concepts, music, counting, rhythm, balance and lots of imagination and creativity! Limited to 6 students (plus their grown up!).

BALLET 1 (AGE 5-7) with Joanna Patterson
An introduction to ballet basics for the little one who loves to dance. We focus on correct alignment and terminology while maintaining a sense of fun and self-expression in the classroom. Limited to 12 students.
Thursday 4:00 – 4:45
BALLET II (AGE 8-10) with Joanna Patterson
Next steps in the ballet syllabus for the dancer with a grasp of the basics, including an introduction to barre work. This class emphasizes musicality, port de bras, and proper placement and movement of the head. **Also appropriate for new dancers age 11/12.

HIP HOP FUNDAMENTALS (AGE 8-12) with Elizabeth Rancourt-Smith
Hip Hop is one of today's most popular and often most misunderstood forms of dance- a truly American dance style that is continuously changing in real time with our society. FUNdamentals will focus on the basis for hip hop dance by exploring it's culture and roots. Students will learn about improvisation, popping, locking, breakdancing, and many more fundamental styles that make up hip hop dance culture, and learn how to apply and make these technical bases applicable for today's mainstream dance styles! It is sure to be high energy and a lot of fun!

TEEN/ADULT TAP with Elizabeth Rancourt-Smith
Geared to meet the learner "where they're at", this class focuses on teaching solid technical basics and rhythms and builds upon those basics to teach classic repertoire combined with more modern, stylized tap styles. Whether you are a beginner wanting to check off your bucket list, or returning to tap with some previous experience, you'll be making beautiful music in no time!

PREBALLET (AGE 3 & 4) with Joanna Patterson
Pre-ballet technique, dance games and creative movement exercises to introduce preschoolers to the fun and focus of the class environment. Limited to 12 students per class.

MODERN I (AGE 5-7) with Joanna Patterson
An introduction to modern technique for the young dancer, including floorwork, center work, traveling, and improvisational skills. Features some core ballet technique via a modern dance curriculum. Limited to 12 students.

MODERN II (AGE 8-10) with Joanna Patterson
A continuation of the skills learned Modern I, including floorwork, center work, across the floor combinations, and improvisational skills, with a greater emphasis on learning choreography that complements the technique learned in class.
**Also appropriate for new dancers age 11/12.

MAKING DANCES (AGE 8-12) with Joanna Patterson
A chance for young dancers to explore different choreographic concepts as a means to creating their own works. Elements include composition, form/structure, shape, dynamics and space/time. Improvisational and collaborative techniques will also be explored as a means to choreography. Students will have the opportunity to perform their works for family and friends at the end of the class session.

TEEN/ADULT MODERN CONTEMPORARY with Joanna Patterson
This modern/contemporary dance class has roots in many classical modern techniques, and focuses on the use of breath, correct body alignment, articulation of the foot and spine, and weight shifts. Dancers will be guided through exercises on the floor, in the center, and traveling, as well as learn phrase work and techniques for improvisation. Students will gain an understanding of anatomical principles through the classwork, as well as increase their ability to execute movement phrases, and learn to take creative risks in a supportive environment.

BALLET/TAP COMBO (AGE 4 & 5) with Joanna Patterson
An introduction to both beginning ballet and beginning tap for the younger dancer. Fundamental techniques to build strong dancers in both genres. Dance games and creative play keep a sense of fun while learning occurs! Limited to 12 students.

TAP I (AGE 5-7) with Elizabeth Rancourt-Smith
Let your little learner make music with their feet! This class focuses on building basic technique and rhythm, with an emphasis on using listening skills to identify rhythm patterns and changes in sound. Limited to 12 students.

MUSICAL THEATER: NEWSIES JR (AGE 8-12) with Joanna Patterson
Musical theater for young dancers - kids with vibrant energy and big personalities will have a great time learning musical theater dance basics, and include them in a piece for performance! Students in this class will perform a Newsies inspired dance in front of the Pickard Theater at Bowdoin College on Wednesday, August 9th before the 7:30 pm Maine State Music Theatre performance of Newsies! MSMT company dancers will also visit the dancers for a talk-back during one class session. A great new summer experience for kids!
Wednesday 6:15– 7:30
TEEN/ADULT BALLET with Joanna Patterson
A chance for teens and adults to learn and explore the beauty and discipline of ballet. A basic ballet barre provides an incredible workout for the legs, core, and arms, and increases coordination, flexibility, and grace. A focus on correct alignment, footwork, and rotation along with port de bras and balances will challenge and inspire everyone at the barre! Brief center and traveling work will apply the lessons learned at the barre for a more complete ballet class experience. Great introduction for new students and a good summer workout for those maintaining their technique.
